Order of the Engineer

The Order of the Engineer (Order) is the roster of engineers in the United States who have participated in the Engineer's Ring Ceremony and who have publicly accepted the "Obligation of an Engineer."

Based on the Canadian Ritual of the Calling of the Engineer, the Order was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering professions and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer (the ring).

Inductees publicly accept and recite the "Obligation of an Engineer" making a formal statement of public and professional ethics and responsibilities, similar to the Hippocratic Oath of medical professionals.

Participating in the Order of the Engineer

When can I participate in the Order?

You will receive an email invitation the semester you apply for graduation, shortly after the deadline to apply for graduation. Ceremonies are held at the end of each fall and spring semester.

When are the ceremonies?

  • Fall: The ceremony is usually the day before Commencement in the late afternoon.
  • Spring: The ceremony will be one or to two days before commencement.

Are family and friends allowed?

Usually, yes. But there have been occasions where guests had to be limited or excluded altogether. This occurs when the Inductee class size is large and the room where the Ceremony occurs cannot accommodate the additional people. If this occurs, the Inductees will be notified ahead of time and it is their responsibility to inform their guests. This is usually a concern in the Spring.

What is the cost?

There is a one-time fee of $30, plus online processing fee. You can come to WPEB 441 to be sized for your ring, or you can use this . There are no annual dues.

What if I don't know my ring size?

Please come to WPEB 441 to have your little finger of working hand measured. You will need to put the ring size on your online registration form.

Do I need to attend the ceremony?

Yes. The ceremony is mandatory. If you do not attend, you will not receive your ring and your fee will be refunded.

Are there meetings to attend after the ceremony?

No.

What if I missed the ceremony?

You can always take part in the next one we offer or if you have moved away, contact the nearest College of Engineering at a local University to see if they participate or go to the to see where the nearest Link, or chapter location, is to you.

My family member/co-worker/friend is an engineer. Can they participate?

Yes. They will need to send proof that they have an engineering degree (i.e.-copy of their diploma, business card, PE license, etc.) and be able to attend the ceremony. Email proof to NSHE specialist Sharee Williams or Assistant Dean Candice Bauer.
