Undergraduate and graduate students interested in career opportunities in northern ΒιΆΉΣ³»’s bioengineering sector can attend the Bioengineering Career Spotlight event from 4:30 to 7 p.m. March 30 in the Harry Reid Engineering Laboratory (HREL) 109-110. Undergraduate research experiences in bioengineering also will be discussed. The event is free, but

“We hope this event will go beyond the College of Engineering’s great career fairs by focusing on a single topic: bioengineering,” Miles Greiner, Mechanical Engineering and Foundation professor, said. “This topic holds great interest to engineering and other STEM students.”

He added that it is important that student clubs — specifically the University chapters of the Biomedical Engineering Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) — have taken the lead in the event planning.

“I believe this event is a launching point for ASME that creates a steady outline to provide students with growing resources and open their eyes to the possibilities and opportunities within engineering during and after college,” David Reiner, ASME chapter president, said.

Greiner said he hopes to offer future Career Spotlight events featuring such topics as aerospace engineering, nuclear safety, automotive and battery technology.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.: One-on-one employment and research opportunity discussions
  • 5:30 to 6:20 p.m.: Program and pizza provided by EnCompass Technologies
    • Keynote speaker Derek Beenfeldt, chief medical officer for Hometown Health and ΒιΆΉΣ³» graduate, will give the talk “Relationship between Careers in Engineering and Medicine.”
    • Joseph Emery of EnCompass Technologies will give the talk “Biomedical Engineering and Medical Products Career Opportunities in Northern ΒιΆΉΣ³».”
    • Jose Moreno Duran and David Reiner, presidents of the University chapters of the Biomedical Engineering Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, respectively, will give the talk “Clubs Help Students Better Understand Biomedical and Other Engineering Career Opportunities.
  • 6:30 to 7 p.m. Additional one-on-one employment and research opportunity discussions
