National Science Foundation supports University networking event

Students engage with professionals for Statfest 2014

The ΒιΆΉΣ³»­ mathematics department in conjunction with the National Science Foundation will host Statfest, Saturday. Nov. 15. The one-day seminar is an opportunity for students to gain professional development in science and mathematical fields. 

 Throughout the day, attendants will learn about government, academic and statistical careers. Guest speakers will share their industry insight and personal experiences.   Featured speakers include: Javier Rojo, mathematics department chair and event organizer; Jeremy Taylor, University of Michigan; Olympia Hadjiliadis, City University of New York,; Beimar Iriarte, Abbott Diagnostics; Ramon Durazo-Arvizu, Loyola University Chicago; Luis Léon Novelo, University of Louisiana at Lafayette; Jessica Jaynes; University of ΒιΆΉΣ³»­, Las Vegas; and Dajiang Liu, Pennsylvania State University. Doctoral students Suzette Puente from the University of California, Berkeley and Benjamin White from Rice University in Houston, Texas, will also present to attendants.

The event is open to high school students and teachers. Students are encouraged to sign up fast due to preparation needs. The deadline to apply is noon Friday, Nov.7.  Registration is free for all participants. To apply, email the Mathematics and Statistics Department at math@unr.edu.
