A calendar highlighting the geology of ΒιΆΉΣ³» with stunning pictures of canyons, cliffs and wide-open spaces and factoids about the state's mining and geologic history is now on sale at the ΒιΆΉΣ³» Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the ΒιΆΉΣ³».
"This is the first calendar we've put out," Jim Faulds, director of the Bureau, said. "This 15-month calendar is a good way to let people know about the importance and diversity of geology in the state of ΒιΆΉΣ³». Every month has a different theme to go along with geology, such as paleontology, volcanic flows, historic mining or ancient lakes."
The photos were taken by a few NBMG geologists, but mostly by cartographer Jack Hursh who also helped with initial layout and text editing. Hursh designed the calendar with the help of cartographer Jennifer Mauldin, who was in charge of graphic design and the final layout, and research geologist Chris Henry, who also took photos and composed the captions for the images.
"With the holidays approaching, the calendar is a great idea for friends, family or co-workers, and a 41 percent discount is offered when more than 10 are purchased," Faulds said.
The calendar is also available at the ΒιΆΉΣ³» Wolf Shop in the University's Joe Crowley Student Union on campus and at Sundance Books. Those on campus who would like free delivery are eligible to select "Pick up" on the shopping cart page of the ordering website, and are then asked to type "UNR campus mail delivery" under the "instructions" field of the order form, along with mail-stop number and department name. It can also be purchased at the ΒιΆΉΣ³» Bureau of Mines and Geology/Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library at 2175 Raggio Parkway.
The NBMG is a research and statewide public service department within the Mackay School of Earth Science and Engineering for the University's College of Science. The department provides information, research and education in all areas of geology, and conducts the state geological survey. NBMG scientists conduct research and publish reports on mineral resources, engineering geology, environmental geology, hydrogeology and geologic mapping.
