Obtaining legal services

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is part of the Βι¶ΉΣ³» System of Higher Education (NSHE) Office of Legal Affairs, which operates under the executive leadership of the NSHE Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Chief General Counsel. The General Counsel has a dual reporting line to the NSHE Chief General Counsel and the University President.

The OGC represents the Βι¶ΉΣ³». In that capacity, we advise and counsel the President, academic and administrative officers, faculty and staff - all in their official capacities - on various legal issues impacting the University.

Requests for contract review or assistance should be directed to OGCcontracts@unr.edu. Requests for all other legal assistance should be directed to (775) 784-3510 or OGC@unr.edu. Your matter will then be assigned to the appropriate OGC attorney, who will then contact you directly. For both contracts and general requests, if you previously have worked with an OGC attorney on the same or similar matter, you may include them in the email request so you can continue to work with them on such matters.

If your request for legal assistance originates from the Βι¶ΉΣ³» Medical School, please contact our Medical School office at OGCmed@unr.edu.

The OGC does not advise or represent individuals in personal legal matters.

Retaining outside counsel

The OGC is responsible for determining the appropriate legal resources to be dedicated to all legal matters related to the University. This includes deciding whether to select and retain an outside attorney for any particular legal matter when considerations such as need, cost and specialized subject matter make it appropriate to do so. Contracts that provide for the hiring of outside attorneys for legal services require written approval of the NSHE’s Chief General Counsel’s Office and the OGC consults with NSHE’s Chief General Counsel on such matters.

University faculty and staff should not contact outside counsel concerning university business without prior consultation with OGC. Similarly, all communications from outside attorneys should be referred to OGC.
