The Â鶹ӳ» Public Health Training Center was recently approved as a provider of the state mandated cultural competency training for healthcare facilities in Â鶹ӳ». In 2019, Senate Bill 364 and Senate Bill 470, brought to the floor by Senator David Parks and Brooke Maylath, passed requiring medical facilities licensed in Â鶹ӳ» to follow various procedures surrounding cultural humility in the workplace. These procedures include anti-discrimination policies and the annual completion of a certified cultural competency training.
The mandatory cultural competency training requires a number of topics to be covered, including race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, gender expression, implicit bias, and discrimination. With this, Â鶹ӳ» is the first state to specifically outline the topics required in a mandated cultural competency training.
The NVPHTC's Cultural Compentecy Training, in compliance with the State of Â鶹ӳ», is available every month on with the next training on November 18-20, 2020.
Through this Cultural Competency Training, employees in the healthcare field will learn to challenge their own biases and discriminatory practices in order to systematically improve the quality of care in facilities across the state. The NVPHTC and University Â鶹ӳ», Reno are working on the frontlines in advancing diversity and inclusion in the healthcare setting, serving as a model for the rest of the country.
