Clinic Services

Individual, Couples and Family Counseling

We offer both short and long-term counseling that address a variety of low-acuity mental health concerns. Typically, counseling sessions are scheduled for one-hour per week. Since the clinic is a training center we may not be able to meet the psychological needs of every individual, couple, or family. In these situations, we will discuss referral options with the client. All services are provided by pre-licensed student clinicians, studying to be Clinical Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists, in the practicum or internship phase of the Counselor Education Program. All individual, couple and family sessions are recorded for training purposes.

Group Therapy

The clinic offers various support and process groups throughout the semester. The types of groups we provide are dependent on the training and availability of student clinicians, as well as the needs of our campus and community. Groups are typically composed of around eight members, run 1-2 hours per week, and may be facilitated by an individual or pair of student clinicians. All group therapy sessions are recorded for training purposes. Please contact us to learn more about our current group therapy offerings.

Play Therapy

Many of our student clinicians are trained in the practice of play therapy. Play therapy is a structured approach to therapy that takes into account the developmental stage and learning style of the child. The practice is based on the premise that children, being less verbal, use the “language” of play to communicate. The goal of therapy is to learn ways to express experience and feelings, as well as practice adaptive behaviors and social skills. All play therapy sessions are recorded for training purposes.

Consultation and Referral

The Downing Counseling Clinic offers consultation and referral if we are unable to meet your psychological needs. We have strong partnerships with many agencies, private practices, and facilities in our community that offer higher levels of care. Our student clinicians can assist in the process of connection to these services.
