What will I learn with a renewable energy minor?

The goal of the renewable energy minor is to provide students with the technical skills, economic and political background, and analysis and design skills needed to apply the knowledge gained in their major to the nationally important issues of alternative and renewable energy.

Students will be exposed to a broad range of technical and social/political disciplines necessary to understand the sources of renewable energy, technical and economic decisions involved in using alternative energy sources, and the policy and regulatory issues that influence adoption of alternative energy resources.

Learning outcomes

The objective of the interdisciplinary renewable energy minor is to provide students with technical skills, economic and political background, and analysis and design skills that will help them to apply the knowledge gained in their major to the important national issues of alternative and renewable energy. Students will be exposed to a broad range of technical and social/political disciplines necessary to understand the sources of renewable energy, technical and economic decisions involved in using alternative energy sources, and the policy and regulatory issues that influence the development and adoption of alternative energy resources.

Why choose renewable energy?

Renewable energy is vital for the sustainable growth of our economy and population. As the demand for energy continues to grow, the need for renewable energy solutions will only increase. By minoring in renewable energy, you will be key to the future health and safety of our global community.

Tracks in the renewable energy minor

This minor has two tracks. Students may elect either track, but for most engineering students, Track I will be preferable as it will enhance their degree to include a specialization in alternative energy. For most students majoring in other areas, Track II will be most suitable.

Track I: Engineering majors

Track I is designed for students in engineering who seek additional specialization in the interdisciplinary studies of alternative energy sources, improved generation technologies, energy policy and the economics of various energy sources.

Track II: Other majors

Track II is designed primarily for students in disciplines other than engineering. This track may be particularly appropriate for students interested in science, environmental studies, political science and business. It may also be appropriate for those who are technically oriented with a focus on geothermal energy.

Chemical engineering

Chemical engineers apply scientific principles -- along with a healthy dose of creativity -- to the creation of new chemicals and chemical processes that can improve our quality of life. Chemical engineers are involved in the design and manufacture of everything from a zestier version of your favorite toothpaste to a life-saving pharmaceutical to new and inexpensive fuel sources.

Electrical engineering

A degree in electrical engineering prepares students to develop solutions to urgent problems in areas including generating and regulating electric power supplied to the home, manipulating signals for communication purposes, and designing specialized circuits.

Environmental engineering

Environmental engineers use their expertise to improve human health, the environment and quality of life. For example, environmental engineers may help purify drinking water, prevent water pollution or develop strategies to manage toxic or hazardous waste.
