Learning outcomes

Chemistry majors complete courses providing a solid background in the physical sciences and mathematics, together with a sequence of courses in general, analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Lecture classes are complemented by laboratories that give hands-on experience in chemical methods and instrumentation. The department also strongly encourages undergraduate students to become involved in laboratory research under the supervision of a faculty member. Undergraduate research is an outstanding learning opportunity that cannot be found in classwork alone.

Graduates of the bachelor's degree in chemistry will graduate with the skills to:

  • Work in a lab alongside professional chemists
  • Seek their careers of choice, whether in research, teaching, or health sciences
  • Pursue competitive and challenging graduate programs, whether in the Department of Chemistry or elsewhere

Hands-on experience

Undergraduate research offers students an outstanding learning opportunity that cannot be found in classwork alone. In addition to lectures, chemistry students are given hands-on laboratory experience in chemical methods and instrumentation. The department also strongly encourages its majors to become involved in laboratory research under the supervision of a faculty member.
