5,322: Camping, Use of Tents, Overnight Parking and Occupancy of Vehicles

Camping or the use of tents is prohibited on University property, in or under University structures, or in University buildings except under the approved exceptions noted below. The occupancy of vehicles overnight is prohibited except under the approved exceptions below.

This policy applies to all University employees, students, University affiliates, contractors, visitors and members of the public.

  1. Camping and Tents
    1. “Camping” for purposes of this policy is defined as any of the following on University property:
      1. Establishing, or attempting to establish, temporary or permanent living space, or a place for storing of personal belongings, or sleeping, with or without bedding, pillows, sleeping bags, mattresses, backpacks, tents, hammocks or similar devices, structures, or other sleeping equipment.

        Such activities constitute camping regardless of the intent of the participants or the nature of any other activities in which they may also be engaging.
    2. “Tent’ for purposes of this policy is defined as any of the following on University property:
      1. A structure, enclosure, or shelter with side-walls or drops, constructed of fabric or pliable material supported by any manner.
    3. "Shade Structure” for purposes of this policy is defined as a canopy cover, party tent, shade cover and pop-up tent. Shade Structure is included in the definition of Tent. The use of a Shade Structure for Events, Major Events or University Events, as those terms are defined in the Policy for Use of University Space (UAM 5,302), is allowed under the following conditions.
      1. A Shade Structure shall only be allowed in University reservable space and only upon receiving approval pursuant to UAM 5,302. The use of a Shade Structure in these reservable spaces may be prohibited during University Events.
      2. A Shade Structure shall not be larger than 10’ x 10’ in size. The University shall be allowed to use a Shade Structure that is larger than 10’ x 10’ in size for University Events. All Shade Structures, shall be weighted and in compliance with the University’s Slackline, Hammock, Ropes and Tent Stake Policy (UAM 5,456).
  2. Parking
    Vehicles may be parked overnight on campus with a valid parking permit. Overnight occupancy of these vehicles while on campus is prohibited.
  3. Approved Exceptions
    1. Overnight occupancy in recreational vehicles for tailgating at University home football games shall be allowed in accordance with the University’s rules or policies regarding tailgating.
    2. Exceptions for the use of University areas for overnight camping and overnight occupancy in vehicles may be made by the President or designee.
