Summary

Eleni Oikonomidoy is a professor of multicultural education in the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) at the Βι¶ΉΣ³»­. She joined the University in 2006. Prior to that, she taught in various contexts in Seattle, Washington, ranging from preschool to higher education. Dr. Oikonomidoy was an Early Childhood Educator for four years. She also taught English as a second language for the Southwest Family and Youth Services, Greek as a foreign language for Bellevue Community College & the Seattle Language Academy, and university-level classes at Antioch University, Seattle.

Her scholarship interests are twofold: Primarily, her research focuses on the social and academic integration experiences of newcomer immigrant and refugee students in elementary and secondary schools. She is also interested in exploring the experiences of underrepresented groups of students in higher education. Her research has been published in such journals as Journal of Language, Identity & Education, Pedagogy, Culture & Society, Cambridge Journal of Education, TESOL Quarterly and Higher Education Research & Development. Her solo-authored book titled, Critical Cosmopolitanism in Diversity Students’ Lives: Universal and Restricted Expressions, was published in 2018 by Routledge. She aims to integrate a global comparative lens in her research and teaching.

Dr. Oikonomidoy serves as the managing editor of the journal Intercultural Education since 2021 and she has been an Editorial Advisory Board member of the journal Pedagogy, Culture & Society since 2015. She has received the COEHD’s Outstanding Outreach Award in 2015, Outstanding Researcher Award in 2016, Judith Bible Excellence in Teaching Award in 2019, and the University’s Inclusion, Equity and Diversity Leadership Award in 2020. Dr. Oikonomidoy also has served as associate dean for the COEHD from 2019-2024.
