Thomas Albright, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and is the Deputy Â鶹ӳ» State Climatologist. He and his lab group work on conservation, sustainability, and environmental justice issues including biodiversity, climate change assessment, urban heat hazards and active transportation. They use a variety of spatial analysis, GIS, modeling, remote sensing, sensors and survey methodologies in this work. Albright has mentored dozens of scholars ranging from undergraduate to postdoctoral fellows, has worked in sixteen countries, and has been funded by NASA, NSF, Fulbright, NOAA, National Parks Service and others.
Project overview
The United States has rates of roadway fatalities that are several times higher than peer countries and Â鶹ӳ» is rated as one of the deadliest states for pedestrians and bicyclists. This project focuses on safety and equity of signalized street intersections in the City of Reno. The student will gain experience in mapping/GIS and tabular data analysis (e.g. Excel), and in design, collection and interpretation of survey data. The project will involve collaboration with City of Reno staff and could be of interest to a variety of majors including geography, civil engineering, public health and others. While some experience with Excel, GIS or data analysis could be helpful, the most important qualification is your interest!
